Volleyball playoffs round one recap

10 local teams advance to second round



NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The GHSA volleyball state playoffs began Wednesday night with 13 local teams competing in the first round. Three of the four Forsyth teams to earn playoff berths won their opening round matchups and seven of nine North Fulton teams advanced.

Class 7A

Lambert 3, Berkmar 0— Though Berkmar hadn’t won a single match this season, they still earned a playoff spot. But Lambert was quick to show the Patriots that their goings wouldn’t be any easier in the postseason.  

The Lady Longhorns dominated Berkmar in three straight sets (25-5, 25-6, 25-3) to advance to the second round where they will take on Mountain View.

North Forsyth 3, Lakeside-Dekalb 0 — After falling for the first time in area play this season against Lambert in the area championship, North Forsyth bounced back with a sweep of Lakeside-Dekalb (25-11, 25-14, 25-16).

The Lady Raiders will take on Area 6 champions North Gwinnett in the second round. North Gwinnett beat North Forsyth in two sets on Aug. 24.

South Forsyth 3, Norcross 0 — The regular season may have been a down year for South Forsyth, but the War Eagles showed their might in a sweep of Norcross Wednesday night (25-18, 25-19, 25-10).

Hannah McGlockton had 10 kills in the matchup and South compiled 15 aces.

South will face Area 8 champions Grayson in the second round. Tuesday’s matchup will be the first meeting of the teams this season.

Kennesaw Mountain 3, West Forsyth 0 — By placing fourth in the area tournament, West Forsyth had a challenging draw in the first round, taking on Kennesaw Mountain (41-10).

West kept things close in the second set, but would ultimately fall in three sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-19). West made its first playoff appearance since 2014.

Brookwood 3, Roswell 2 — Underdogs Roswell took the first two sets from Area 7 champions Brookwood, but the Lady Hornets would drop the next three to be eliminated from the playoffs (19-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 17-15).

After dropping sets three and four, Roswell fought in the decisive fifth set but came up short, 17-15.

The loss was Roswell’s second straight in the first round of the playoffs.


Class 6A

Chattahoochee 3, Lakeside Evans 2 — Chattahoochee got the upset win over Lakeside Evans Thursday, their first win in the state playoffs since 2013.

Chattahoochee led 2-1 after three lopsided sets, but things got much closer in the fourth and fifth. Lakeside edged Hooch 25-23 in the fourth set, but the decisive fifth set swung in the Lady Cougars favor as they took the 15-13 win (15-25, 25-14, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13).

With the win, Hooch will face the defending state champions Harrison in the second round Tuesday.

Alpharetta 3, South Paulding 0 — Area 7 champions Alpharetta opened the playoffs with a dominant three set sweep of South Paulding (25-11, 25-6, 25-2).

Sophomore Nina Williams led Alpharetta with 11 kills. The Lady Raiders had 17 aces in three sets.

The Lady Raiders will host Allatoona in the second round. It will be the first meeting of the teams this season.

Johns Creek 3, Alexander 0 — No. 2 seed Johns Creek had no troubles in dispatching Alexander Thursday night, sweeping the Cougars in three sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-11).

Caroline Mohler led the Lady Gladiators in kills with 14 and compiled an ace, a block and three digs. With the win, Johns Creek has advanced to the second round every year since 2009.

Johns Creek will face Area 4 champs Jonesboro in the second round on Tuesday.  

Centennial 3, Northgate 1 — Centennial squeaked into the playoffs with a close win over Cambridge in the area tournament. Now, they have advanced to the second round after an underdog win over Area 5 champs Northgate.

Isabelle Hall had 18 assists and Olivia Weidmann led the Lady Knights with nine kills.

Centennial will travel to take on Sequoyah Tuesday in the second round.


Class 4A

Blessed Trinity 3, Central 0 — Central was no match for the three-time defending state champions Blessed Trinity who handily swept the Lions (25-4, 25-13, 25-9).

BT will travel to take on Area 6 champions Northwest Whitefield this Tuesday in a battle of two of the top teams in 4A. The two teams have a combined 96-8 record (Blessed Trinty 56-5, Whitfield 40-3).


Class A-Private

St. Francis 3, Lakeview Academy 0 — St. Francis kept its season rolling with a sweep of Lakeside Academy Thursday night in its second playoff appearance since 2009.

The Lady Knights will look to continue their success as they take on Area 5 champions Holy Innocents’ next Tuesday in the second round.

Fellowship Christian 3, Athens Academy 0 — After a close first set, Fellowship ran away with a first round win over Athens Academy (25-23, 25-14, 25-12).

The Lady Paladins will travel to take on Mount de Sales in the second round this Tuesday.

Fellowship Christian won this season’s prior matchup of the two teams, 2-0.

Hebron Christian 3, Mount Pisgah 0 — Mount Pisgah’s season came to an end Thursday night as the Lady Patriots fell to Area 8 champs Hebron Christian (25-12, 25-23, 25-14).

Mount Pisgah made its fourth straight playoff appearance this season.
